Rev-iew: (a 2-‘fer) Drop (2025) & Megan 2.0 (2025)

For the sake of being a social media hog, I’m going to compress these two reviews into one. Neither of their trailers really sold me on the theatrical experience, so I waited for VOD. Even then, I paused for them to reach a sale price on FANDANGO. In a way, I’m glad I did. These were perfect for a snuggle double-feature on a midweek chaos pause.

Let’s see what the fine folks at Wikipedia have to say about “Drop” (be cool and donate to these guys on occasion):

Drop is a 2025 American mystery thriller film[5] directed by Christopher Landon and written by Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach. It stars Meghann FahyBrandon SklenarViolett Beane, and Jeffery Self. In the film, a widowed mother receives threatening messages during her first date in years, which cause her to question her date and fear her safety.

Drop had its premiere at the SXSW on March 9, 2025, and was released in the United States by Universal Pictures on April 11, 2025. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and grossed $28 million worldwide.

The Rev-iew (mini version):

I find tech horror boring. Perhaps it’s because I’m middle aged and, “get off my lawn,” but I think it’s lazy and not even remotely threatening. I still prefer punching the killer in the face compared to ruining his or her social life with a Tweet.

That said, this film may have been good enough to change my mind. This was a fairly tense “who-done-it” with some great acting, wonderful editing, cool camara tricks, and a believable sub-plot villain. I thought it may have overstayed it’s welcome near the end, but even that led to a couple of satisfying moments. This one is best watched in silence with a partner.

Again, from the fine folks at Wikipedia:

M3GAN 2.0 is a 2025 American science fiction action film directed by Gerard Johnstone from a story he co-wrote with Akela Cooper. A sequel to the 2022 film M3GAN and the second installment in the M3GAN franchise, the film stars Allison WilliamsViolet McGrawIvanna Sakhno, and Jemaine Clement, with Amie Donald physically portraying M3GAN while Jenna Davis voices the character. Jason Blum and James Wan return as producers under their respective Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster companies. It follows M3GAN being rebuilt to combat a humanoid military robot built using M3GAN’s technology that is attempting an AI takeover.

M3GAN 2.0 premiered in New York on June 24, 2025, and was released in North America by Universal Pictures on June 27. The film received mixed reviews from critics and has grossed $39.1 million against a budget of $15–25 million.

The Rev-iew:

I loved the first Megan film. I thought it was a perfect mix of sci-fi and light-hearted horror which could be used as an introductory film for younger crowds. It worked all the way around, with some great comedic timing. I think MEGAN 2.0 was made on a dare.

Imagine it: The Blumhouse guys are passing a joint around an old dining room table in a run-down cabin in the woods. Suddenly, someone breaks the cycle, coughs a bit, and says, “dude, what if we made her The Terminator?”

Then, the rest of them threw money at the idea just as Door Dash delivered their Taco Bell.

This one is corny, over-the-top action sequences with Megan’s brand of snappy wit. It would get tired quickly, if it wasn’t for Ivanna Sakhno. Her portrayal of dark force-wielder Shin Hati in the Star Wars Ahsoka series is one of the best SW characters created in the Disney-era, IMO.

It’s fun, as long as you know the film is purposely being ridiculous. Terminator was horror, but T2 was action. Alien was horror, but Aliens was action. Megan was teen-horror, and Megan 2.0 is Gremlins 2 The New Batch. Fun but flawed; there’s a secret cult of Megan worshippers who will keep this franchise alive for a good while. I want Megan vs. Chucky.

Since we’re on the subject of snarky girl power, it would only be fair if I contributed to the conversation with one of my own.

Also, there’s a few other things not listed here that are floating around out there. Best of luck with the hunt.
