I just started walking the park again in the mornings. The weather is finally doing the Texas version of cooling down, so I figured I’d become more physically active. It can’t hurt, right?
In doing so, I’ve been reintroduced to some walking-buddies I made last year; all of them middle-aged Mexican men. They live in huge communities and I’m definitely the odd man out. They’re my link to Latino central and I’m theirs’ to the honky hierarchy.
They can tell me who is doing what on any television show or who is beefing with who in the music industry, but they and no one they know follows what is going on politically in this country. To them, it’s just SSDD; the way it’s been in their world for decades, if not centuries. The details are inconsequential; just that the bitchy white man’s face changes on the television every few years or so.
The difference is that cable news and social media blast it all over the place now. Suburban housewives can’t ignore it anymore when it’s 50% of their Tik Tok feed. It was the same thing when they televised portions of the Vietnam war. Still, the propaganda machine – both sides – only works if you watch it. And, boy, do I watch it.
At first, it irritated me, especially since I’ve gotten off my white-ass several times and sweat buckets in marches and rallies. Mexican and Black men are the only demographics barely represented when I go to such events. If you’d like, I could go back through all the photos I’ve taken and give you statistics, but it’s not worth it. If you’re the type of person who reads me regularly, then you’ve more than likely attended one of these events. You know I’m right.
No, the black and Mexican men don’t come out until the cameras arrive and the riots start. At least that’s what the media wants you to believe. It would be nice if they had a decent mixture during peaceful protests to use as a basis of comparrison, but wish in one hand; poop in the other. Yeah, they drop off their girl at the protests, do some donuts in the street, and then get the f’k out of there. Perhaps they’re just smarter than me and the consequences of my actions are yet to be determined. Thus is life.
Thoughts? This is an interactive blog, you know. Ignorance breeds in silence. This isn’t social media; you’re safe here.
