Never Have I Ever

Why?

Why is it that I can’t get a moment’s peace when it’s time to relax?

I was up before the dawn making coffee for two and fighting DFW airport traffic before most people got to enjoy their morning fart. You know the one I mean.

In the same breath (ew; fart breath), I snuck into enemy territory to kidnap my oldest granddaughter for the weekend. I did drop a payload at the DMZ (otherwise known as Buc-ee’s) per tradition. She just started learning guitar a few months ago and she is playing open mic with me in The Cedars. It was only fair she did so with a new guitar. She celebrated with her first trip to In n Out.

Then…

The afternoon turned left.

To break the monotony, we hopped a train. Not a freight train like those freedom loving YouTuber hobos, but a passenger train. We even bought tickets like real people.

It says a lot about who she and I are as family. We stayed on a train for an hour and a half for no reason whatsoever other than to zone out. She fell asleep. I wanted to. Sometimes I do that to write. I’ll just take a train to nowhere.

Being a reasonable man, I resisted the urge to tend the crop today. Zero. None. When night fell, and we all retreated to opposite ends of the hobbit hole, it slapped me all at once. I know you know.

Of course, that’s when the 23 & Me email notification chimed; in that moment.

It told me things. Things left unsolved for half my life. Man, history foretold I’d learn of this information no other way. With whisps of fever dreams. Also, the cat keeps jump-scaring me.

Then, I went down a rabbit hole making sure I didn’t accidentally f*ck a blood relative during my divorced author years.

All I wanted was to scroll myself to sleep via YouTube UAP videos. Nope. Gotta field midnight emails that may or may not deliver some life-altering sh*t.

Out of respect, that should be an 11am email; tops. Pre-lunch focus, with an afternoon to ponder the results. Perhaps over a cup of Earl Grey in the garden…

Then, there was the new Pentagon UAP drop that I knew nothing about because of train-zoning. That’s a tomorrow thing.

I just want to sleep now. My life changed today, and I, in turn, changed a life. It’s exhausting living so damned dramatically.
